WALKING WOUNDED:
The Waratahs are resting players with the upcoming trip to South Africa in mind as coach Michael Foley rung seven positional and three personnel changes. Flanker Dave Dennis sits on the bench having started every match of the season, handing Rocky Elsom a start and his first captaincy gig for New South Wales in five years. Chris Alcock returns from injury while Rob Horne also returns following his two-week suspension for a dangerous tackle on Kurtley Beale. The return of full-back Bernard Foley looms, while Paddy Ryan is still expecting to be out for a month from a foot injury.
The Bulls, meanwhile, have had some changes to make of their own. The Waratahs’ efforts of late have been inconsistent at bests. Two wins, two losses as well as the bye from their last five matches indicate results-wise that this is a very patchy team. While acknowledging their effort against the Crusaders was one of their better losses – they even had opportunities to secure the upset but were unable to convert them – they backed that up with a disappointing loss to the Brumbies in Canberra. They are third in the Australian Conference with 26 points – equal with the Reds but behind on goal difference – and will need to pull something out of the bag if they are looking to either catch the conference-leading Brumbies (35 points) or the last remaining wildcard sport being held by the Highlanders (34 points). They sit 11th at present.
The Bulls, on the other hand, are finding form at the right time. Just when it looked as if their results would see them miss out on the playoffs for the second consecutive season, captain Pierre Spies and the likes lifted their game. Their composure to hold on against the inconsistent Rebels showed they were capable of scoring points aplenty while being able to defend when they needed to.
